The CBC (Centro Buñuel Calanda) is a Film Museum devoted to the Spanish film maker Luis Buñuel, featuring PRM accessible premises.
Luis Buñuel, a renowned filmmaker, was born in 1900 in Calanda, a village of about three thousand inhabitants, located in the south of Aragón, in the province of Teruel . This village is well known due to the famous celebrations of its Semana Santa (Holy Week), with the noisy excitement of its drums (Tamborada): the continuous drumbeat and several rhythms and beats become a constant buzzing from Friday noon to Saturday afternoon.
To comprehend Buñuel's works it is essential to understand that he was a product of Spanish bourgeoisie: the director drew much of his films from their religious and social implications: themes that were to preoccupy him through the rest of his career.
When he moved to Madrid in 1917, he lived at the prestigious Residencia de Estudiantes until 1925, where he met and became friends with García Lorca and Dalí. The CBC is the right place to get to know lots more about his time in Madrid, in France, in Hollywood in New York and Mexico.
Luis Buñuel, was the first Spaniard to win an Oscar , in 1972 , for his film "El discreto encanto de la burguesia" ("The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" ). He has long been recognized in European critical circles as a great and prolific filmmaker. His short film "Un Chien Andalou" ("An Andalusian Dog", but don't expect any dogs in the film) was the very first to use the imagery of surrealism in 1929. This short film, written in collaboration with Dalí, is said to be the most analysed short film ever. A surreal story of desire, gender confusion and the unconscious, that still retains its power to shock.
The CBC has been founded with the aim to spread and extend the knowledge on the life and the work of Luis Buñuel, showing, in addition, what was alike the city where he lived and how it conformed his "obsessions".
A renewed palace houses the Center Buñuel de Calanda. The nearest parking lo t is about 50/100 mts, in front of the Casa de la Cultura. The route from the car park to the entrance of the CBC is by a street of concrete: the main access consists of four doors , three of them
with steps and one featuring a ramp that leads to a patio (courtyard): entrance to the building is level. The ground floor ( one level and barrier-free ) consists of the visitors reception area, a tourist office, the shop and a temporary exhibitions hall, where exhibits related to the world of cinema or contemporary art are displayed. There's an elevator to reach the first floor where the permanent exhibition is shown. There are five one level and barrier-free exhibitions rooms: the most outstanding aspects of Luis Buñuel and his work can be seen at the reach of hand; in the so called room "The worlds of Buñuel" some of his obsessions are explained... game and "surprise" is present throughout the whole place. Reference to his literary work is made in "A Giraffe", an area loaded with symbolism, where the visitors' interest about the imaginative wealth of the universe of Buñuel is encouraged. Information concerning the making of his films is brought by means of various documents, including recordings of the filmmaker himself: telephones and interactive devices are adjustable in height.
There are accessible (though not adapted ) toilets in each floor.
