ALMERÍA: OLIVE OIL MUSEUM AND TOURIST TRAIN.

Two valuable tourist attractions, accessible to PRM, that allow visitors to better understand history and traditional andalusian culture while enjoying it.

Olive Oil Museum Castillo de Tabernas. Almería.

Canteen at the Olive Oil Museum. Click to zoom imageIn the Old Historic Quarter of the town, the Castillo de Tabernas Olive Oil Co. has fitted out a traditional house (dated in the XIX century) into a museum. That is the Olive Oil Museum Castillo de Tabernas, located in Calle Real, not far from the City Hall Square (Plaza del Ayuntamiento). The nearest car park is the public one at San Pedro . There is a slight ramp to entrance : in this visitors reception area you will find the Tourist Information Office and the "Gourmet Shop" where best food products of the province are displayed and can be bought (Castillo de Tabernas Olive Oil, goats cheese from Fondón, wine from Padules, ham from Serón.) All exhibition areas are PRM accessible ( level access ). The main hall on the ground floor is a "patio" (andalusian courtyard) where a video (in different languages) about old and new methods of making olive oil is shown: one can see there an antique oil press (from the XIX century), old pictures and photographs, and many other ancient and modern objects connected with olive oil making. An ancient alley of the town, cobblestone paved , flowerpots and flowers hanging on the walls, was "swallowed" by the house and is now inside the building. There is a bar-canteen where visitors are offered free tasting of Extra Virgin Olive Oil Castillo de Tabernas on slices of salted bread, a dish of local tomatoes and a glass of local wine, a beer or a soft drink. As there are four steps to get into the bar, persons using wheelchairs or with mobility impairments will be offered this tasting in the level area. There is a wheelchair adapted WC in the Museum. All information panels and labels are written in Spanish, German, French, English, Arabic and Braille and at heights appropriate for wheelchair users . Other facilities for blind and visually impaired visitors are tactile floor surfaces and audio material (recorded commentaries) to accompany the exhibition. The visit takes about 45 minutes and every visitor will be given a Diploma on the knowledge acquired about Olive Oil.

Within its premises the museum organizes cultural programmes including concerts, and "tablaos flamencos" (flamenco dancing live). "2005 Sabores de Almería" gives all visitors the chance, once a month, to savour traditional dishes cooked by a well reputed restaurant in town.

Tourist Train.

Turitren Logo. Click to Zoom image"Turitren", the tourist train that drives you along three interesting routes and through the old historic quarter, is now a major tourist attraction. The departure point is located at the bus stop round the corner of El Paseo and Plaza Circular. This train carries about fifty people and the last of the carriages is wheelchair accessible by means of an electric ramp. A comprehensive audio commentary on the bus as it travels along the route bringing information about monuments and sights is available in Spanish, English and French. A screen will be installed in the near future to provide information for hearing impaired passengers.

Tickets are sold on the train (3.5 Euros) and trips last from 30 to 45 minutes.
