The Province Tourist Board has started once again this summer the "Areas Especiales" program in ten accessible beaches along Costa Blanca in Alicante. This is a program specially designed for mentally impaired people providing respite to their families.
The Costa Blanca comprises the coast of the province of Alicante, in the Autonomous Region of Valencia. The city of Alicante is the central point and the economic centre: to the south of Alicante many holiday destinations have emerged, such as Santa Pola, Torrevieja, Guardamar del Segura and to the north are the most densely populated and famous towns: Campello, Villajoyosa, Denia, Benidorm...
The Province Tourist Board has started once again this summer the "Areas Especiales" program in ten beaches along Costa Blanca in Alicante. This is a program specially designed for mentally impaired people and their families, providing opportunity to individuals with developmental/mental impairments (aged from 6 to 25) and their family members to rest, learn and enjoy their time in the summer leisure during their vacation. This free of charge program is being carried on until September the 17 th in the following accessible beaches: Punta del Raset in Dénia, Arenal Bol in Calpe, playa Centro in La Vila Joiosa, Muchavista in El Campello, Gran Playa in Santa Pola, Glea in Orihuela, Mil Palmeras in Pilar de la Horadada, Playa Poniente in Benidorm and San Juan, Postiguet and Urbanova-Saladares in Alicante.
A 50 square metres tent is available in each one of these "Areas Especiales" with room enough for 15 users per week; amphibious chairs, reserved parking bays in the vicinity, accessible timber walkways , adapted ramps, adapted toilets, adapted changing rooms and accessible showers are some of the facilities provided in these "areas". The services and leisure activities are scheduled in weekly shifts, Monday to Sunday, from 10,30 am to 17 pm, being cared for by a 7 people team, made up of psychologists, social workers, special education teachers and specially trained technicians. It's possible to join the program by contacting the group-coordinators "in situ" at the Area Especial in each beach from 16pm to 17 pm, though it's highly advisable to make a formal booking/request.
