"Vinyl. Records and Record Sleeves by Artists": an exhibition at the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona up to September the 3rd. LP´s to be seen and listened to.
The exhibition "Vinilo. Discos y carátulas de artistas" (Vinyl. Records and Record Sleeves by Artists) opened last May and has been co-produced by the MACBA and the Neues Museum Weserburg Bremen (NMWB). Up to now, there have been very few exhibitions dealing with this area of creativity (one in London in 1973, a second one in Berlin in 1988).
The "Vinyl" exhibition displays around a thousand record covers of those flexible and emotive vinyl long-playing records designed by artists including Beuys, Dubuffet, Robert Frank, Allen Ginsberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Joan Miró. It covers everything from the 1920s avant-garde movements up to the most recent sound experiments, via movements like Nouveau Réalisme, Pop Art and conceptual art. One can watch famous Warhol's covers for Rolling Stones' records "The Velvet Underground & Nico", "Love you live" and "Sticky fingers" or Lennon's " Menlove Ave " in addition to those by Beuys, Dubuffet, Robert Frank, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Roy Lichtenstein...
A section dedicated to collaborations between artists (Tapies, Joan Miró, Equipo Crónica, Rafael Alberti, Ceesepe, César Manrique, Mariscal.) and musicians completes this exhibition, containing some 150 record sleeves.
As well as albums and record covers, the show also contains a great deal of additional material such as cassettes, publications and a wide variety of documents, and visitors have the chance to listen to the exhibition's wide selection of more than a thousand records through a digital system especially designed for the occasion. On individual request several hundreds of sound works from 250 LPs can be chosen and be listened to.
The MACBA has been designed by American architect Richard Meier and every floor is bathed in natural light, which is used both to define and generate space: exterior illumination filters into the galleries through large skylights. Main entrance to the building is accessed from the Plaza by means of a ramp: once inside the reception desk is to our right ( mind that it features just one height) and there is where tickets are bought. On the far end to our left there's an elevator connecting the three floors ( there's an interior long ramp that allows access to all floors but not really suitable for people with reduced mobility). The adapted toilet is to the left of the elevator ( there's another adapted toilet on the second floor, next to the elevator, too)
Guided tours to the exhibitions are included in the ticket purchase and are carried on Weekdays and Saturdays at 6 p.m. and Sundays and public holidays at 12 p.m. (Available in English on Mondays)
Special group visits should be booked on weekdays (except Tuesdays), from 10 a .m. to 12 p.m. by phone, calling +34 93 412 14 13 or via e-mail: servcult@macba.es. The MACBA is closed on Tuesdays (except holidays).
