"Descubre el arte del mediterráneo" a programme offering guided visits and active workshops specially adapted and designed to different impairments in the accessible Museo Bellas Artes Valencia.
Valencia is a charming old city and the capital of the Valencia region (provinces of Valencia, Alicante and Castellón). It is located on the Mediterranean Sea approximately 4 hours to the south of Barcelona and 3 hours to the east of Madrid. Valencia is famous and well known for its Fallas festival (March), for being the birthplace of paella, for hosting the 2007 America´s Cup, and for its beautiful beaches and climate: Valencia enjoys a mild temperate Mediterranean climate. The average annual temperature is 17ºC with warm summers and very mild winters.
The city has 34 museums where art and history can be observed and enjoyed. The Museum of Fine Arts (Museo Bellas Artes San Pío) houses the second largest collection of paintings in Spain after the Prado in Madrid, including works by Sorolla, Goya and Zuloaga. The museum also has valuable paintings from the Valencian School by artists such as Joanes, the Ribaltas, Espinosa, Vicente Lopez, Sorolla, Pinazo and others. Likewise, the collection includes works by Pinturicchio, Andrea del Sarto, Van Dyck, Murillo, Velazquez (a famous self-portrait) and El Greco. It also boasts an interesting selection of contemporary art, sculpture, a collection of prints and another of archaeology.
The Museum has been recently restored and touring it is accessible by means of ramps and accessible elevators (adapted toilets are available, too). A very interesting programme has been recently started: "Descubre el arte mediterráneo" consists of adapted guided visits+ adapted workshops. These visits and workshops (adapted to several impairments) are intended for groups (from 20 to 25 people) mainly from organizations and/or associations of disabled people and should be previously requested.
After visiting five of the Museum exhibition halls, participants take part in active and creative activities carried out by specialized staff and adapted to their impairment. A special permission has been given in order to allow the blind/visually impaired to touch some of the exhibits.
"Descubre el arte mediterráneo " (Discover the Mediterranean art) is a programme developed by the Culture Dept of the local government (Generalitat Valenciana) in collaboration with the CAM (Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo, a local savings bank).
Paella is a well known dish: we know. But there are two famous drinks in the city worth a try: The Agua de Valencia ( Valencia water) is a very famous mix drink (mainly based on orange juice and Cava, the local champagne) and the Horchata (earth almond milk).
