Arona, located in the South coastline of Tenerife Island, is increasing its accessible facilities day by day. With just a 20 to 30 minute transfer time from Tenerife Sur Airport, Arona (Los Cristianos and Playa Americas) has changed well with the times and remains a favourite holiday destination on Tenerife: it has, too, developed as a key resort for disabled travellers and their carers. Playa de Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Vistas beaches are probably the ones featuring the best accessible facilities for impaired people in Europe.
Arona's tourist offer takes up the challenge to reach everyone, including impaired people, through the Arona Integral Accessibility Plan. A project goal is to improve lives of impaired people with disabilities, might they be residents or visitors. The Tourist and Social Service Departments of Arona organise sporting events for wheelchair users on a regular basis.
Arona's City Council has just launched a new Tenerife's Barrier Free Tourism Guide which provides information about accessible sites both in this popular municipality and the rest of Tenerife Island . This Guide's pdf is available in the Internet (at Arona's website www.arona.org ) and offers a tri-lingual edition (Spanish, English and German) covering the following:
-Tourist Offices
-Accessible Hotels
-Accessible Beaches
-Streets and Promenades
-Daytime and Night Leisure
-Shopping Centres
-Restaurants
-Places of interest in Tenerife Island
-Places of interest in La Gomera Island
-Transfers & excursions
-Accessible WCs and European Key
-Technical aid equipment for hire
-Chemists
-Hospitals and Medical Centres
-Useful Phone numbers
The printed edition of this Barrier Free Tourism Guide, including a street map of Arona and a map of the island, can be requested form Arona's tourist offices.
The Arona Integral Accessibility Plan concerns not only about town planning, transport, communications and leisure/tourism but on disability awareness by organizing Accessible Tourism courses given to those professionals related to the tourism industry, just like the one carried out last April.
Disabled visitors will be delighted with the accessibility of the Arona municipality, including the now 7km long barrier free and completely wheelchair accessible promenade (it's the longest in Europe!)
