IBIZA: TURNING INTO AN ACCESSIBLE CITY

Accessibility is thought of, by the Ibiza City Council, as a basic principle to be applied to all the city's tourist attractions and their aim is to turn into an accessible city both for residents and visitors.

Click to zoom image.Ibiza's four year Plan for Tourist Excellence is aimed to the completion of several projects and improvements, at the initiative of the City Council, having all in them accessibility as a key factor, such as: improve the urban environments of the City, create new products (seminars, congresses, exhibitions.) and managing the tourism industry in the city (municipal tourist information, training courses for the tourist board staff and creation of the Tourist Observatory). Accessibility is thought of, by the Ibiza City Council, as a basic principle to be applied to all the city's tourist attractions and their aim is to turn into an accessible city both for residents and visitors. Accessibility related not only to the physical environment but to communication and information means.

Playa Talamanca. Eivissa. Click to zoom image.Leisure activities especially designed for the disabled have been held during Summer in the Talamanca beach: games in the sand, kayak and sailing, organized by the Club Nautico of Eivissa with the collaboration of a local organization ADAS, the City council of Eivissa and the Plan for Tourist Excellence. This project has been supported too by the Red Cross. A project that will, for sure, attract impaired travellers and holidaymakers to the island. The Council of Tourism is elaborating a comprehensive guide providing information about all those activities specially designed for disabled people that can be enjoyed in Eivissa. (Amphy-buggies are available in Talamanca and ses Figueretes Beaches)

Aiming to improve the quality of life of disabled people, all the rehabilitation works being carried put the stress on the levels of accessibility in streets throughout the city, removing architectural barriers in the streets, beaches and public buildings.

Traffic lights with audible signals are being installed and with the collaboration of the ONCE (Spanish National Organisation for the Blind) a tourist guide to the city has been published in Braille as well as the menu cards in the restaurants.

This Tourist Guide Ibiza World Heritage for blind/visually impaired people, which is available in several languages (Catalan, Spanish, English and German) is available at the Tourist Information Office.
