BADAJOZ Y ALENTEJO: ACCESSIBLE ROUTE

A Project joining Spain and Portugal through the border by means of a tourist route accessible to PRM.

Olivenza.Plaza Mayor. Click to zoom image. This Project is being promoted and carried out by the Spanish organizations ADERCO (Asociación para el Desarrollo Rural de la Comarca de Olivenza) and CEDECO (Centro Desarrollo Comarcal de Tentudía) and the Portuguese ESDIME (Agencia para o Desenvolvimento Local no Alentejo Sudoeste), joining together the area of Terras Dentro (in Alentejo, Portugal), and the Spanish ones of Tentudía and Olivenza, in Badajoz.

The tourist guide of this route is being elaborated now: it includes all cultural resources, museums, monuments, etc. as well as hotels, restaurants and leisure venues offering accessible facilities to wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility.

Venues to be included in this guide in the area of Tentudía are being validated at present: the route is intended to start at the "Centro de Interpretación Vía de la Plata " in the village of Monesterio (accessible to PRM) and continue by visiting several Visitors' Centres such as Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza de Tentudía, Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza " La Pisá del Caballo" and the Centro de Interpretación de Zurbarán; considered as accesible restaurants are Restaurante Mallorca in Monesterio and Casa Conde de Fuente de Cantos, "El Comendador" in Segura de León and accessible lodging at Casa Rural " La Hoya Alta " in Fuentes de León.

The city of Olivenza was founded by the Order of the Templar Knights in the 13th century and belonged to Portugal until 1801. Nowadays, the town still follows its Portuguese tradition. In general, its architecture combines styles from both countries, and its monumental heritage is quite rich. Both Spanish and Portuguese monuments were restored thanks to a municipal initiative.

The Tentudia area is one of green landscapes and dehesa (wide landscapes full of evergreen and cork oaks), as well as historic and cultural resorts: Heritage from the Santiago knighthood order, Monasteries of Calera and Tentudía, Medieval castles in Segura de León and Montemolín.
